Landscape Gardening Kent
There are many superb examples of landscape gardening in Kent offering outdoor enthusiasts and budding landscape architects not only fantastic days out, but also inspiration for their own projects. Kent – also known as ‘The Garden of England’ – is home to a range of both modern and medieval countryside attractions, and offers the visitor a lot of choice when it comes to visiting fine examples of landscape gardening and architecture. In this article we briefly explore just a few.
One of Kent’s older and most beautiful examples of landscape gardening can be found at Hever Castle near Edenbridge. Originally a country house, built in the 13th century, this residency was at one time home to the second wife of King Henry VIII of England. Hever Castle boasts not just stunning medieval architecture and historical artefacts, but also features a number of terrific mazes, including the famous Yew Maze, originally planted over 100 years ago. In addition to this, visitors with a particular interest in landscape gardening in Kent will enjoy the many walks throughout the grounds taking you through the walled rose garden, the Italian gardens, the Tudor gardens, and around the lake.
If you’re perhaps not so interested in history, but you’re looking for an even more prestigious example of landscape gardening in Kent then Sissinghurst Castle Gardens won’t disappoint even the most avid horticulturalist. Now owned and maintained by the National Trust, the gardens were originally created in the 1930′s but the poet Vita Sackville-West and her husband the author and diplomat Harold Nicolson. The gardens are best loved for their range of characters and themes that are arranged by ‘rooms’ via high clipped hedges.
If neither of those options take your fancy, then why not check out Lullingstone Castle and ‘The World Garden’, featuring a stunning garden laid out in the shape of a map of the world with plants and shrubs located in their respective locations. Lullingstone also feature a Temperate House, housing many rare and spectacular species of plants from around the world.
